For me, the interest in radio was born back in the early 60's when as a kid, I was given a kit crystal set. I can recall how eager I was to get this kit assembled and see if it worked.....
I can still remember the delight after connecting an antenna and the battery, turning the tuning dial and hearing through the headphones, a local broadcast station. Back then, that exhilarating first experience was undoubtedly the beginning of a peaked interest in radio as a whole.
For many years, that was about it - no further radio accomplishments but the underlying interest was still with me. In the late 80's I moved to phase two of my journey to becoming an amateur radio enthusiast.
In 1989 I studied for and gained my restricted Technician class amateur licence. As I was not satisfied with the restrictions this class imposed, in early 1991 I upgraded to a full privilege license and received my current ZL3RG call sign.
Although in the early years of Ham radio I was a keen exponent of the SSB mode, today my interest lies with CW and the digital modes - RTTY and PSK etc.
Recently I have become more than 'mildly' interested in digital contesting. I cannot claim to be an avid contester, but that might change in the future!
To those of you with whom I have had a QSO, I thank you - those that have not had a QSO with me - I look forward to meeting you some day soon .....
